Color Story 4

Flowers know the possible routes.

Started in 2019, Color Story is an on-going research and poster project that tells amusing, and at most times, shocking stories on color.

In 2022, the project turned 4. I dedicated the research and posters to colors named after flowers, quite simply because 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘳 sounded like 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘳, 𝘧𝘭𝘦𝘶𝘳, 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘢—all translating to 'flower'. Like all the other series in this project, this edition chronicles a mixed bag of both sweet and twisted stories.

Happy 4 years and a big thank you to anyone who’s followed and supported the project since Day 1. Color Story 4ever :)

While doing my research, I randomly came across an article on Manila’s very own Dangwa Flower Market (Bulaklakan ng Maynila). I’ve always known that Dangwa was the place to go to for fresh, cheaper-than-retail flowers but I little did I know of the quaint history it carries beyond being a direct wholesaler for blooms. One of this is learning that right across the market is the Dangwa Tranco Terminal, where the market actually gets its name, and every morning since the 1950s, a bus transports blooms to Manila from Baguio and the Cordilleras.

In this same article is an embedded image of the signage of the market paired with instructions on how to commute to its location. I clicked download on this image (file name: Dangwa_flowers _Know_the_possible_routes) obviously named as such for the purposes of the article, but also somehow a funny coincidence that maybe flowers do know the possible routes, they do travel far and wide to get where they need to go.

Paired with the obscure stories on both the flowers and its color counterpart, the illustrations in the series visually took cues from this phrase as seen in the winding curves and roundabouts in the shape of the flowers’ stem.

The images used in the print shop was shot in Espacio Creative Studio in Escolta, Manila. The overall mood and direction for the shoot was to keep things simple and organic. We shot in natural light, on a white background, with the print positioned as if it was ‘growing out’ of flower foam.
